First Lady Emine Erdoğan chaired the first meeting of the United Nations Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste.

“IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPAIR THE CURRENT DAMAGE THROUGH JOINT EFFORTS”

Stating that it is possible to repair the current damage through joint efforts, First Lady Erdoğan stressed that Türkiye has experienced with the Zero Waste Project that it is possible to achieve great outcomes through stable efforts.

Underscoring that success cannot be achieved unless a joint struggle with world countries is put up, Mrs. Erdoğan noted that they have taken action to promote Zero Waste in the international arena and to share their experiences.

Reminding that as a result of the adoption of the resolution, which was put forward by Türkiye at the UN General Assembly, March 30 was designated as the International Day of Zero Waste, First Lady Erdoğan stated: “We should consider next March 30 to be an important opportunity for explaining the Zero Waste movement to the entire world. I find it beneficial to start from now on to work with all the stakeholders for the best practice of the project.”

“WE SHOULD FOCUS ON NOT POLLUTING RATHER THAN CLEARING”

Drawing attention the importance of the implementation by member countries of the Zero Waste resolutions adopted within the UN, First Lady Erdoğan went on to say: “We should work in particular to develop new laws in accordance with the member countries’ own systems. However, we should always remember that the real success of the ‘Global Zero Waste Movement’ depends on its adoption on the part of individuals. We should focus on not polluting rather than clearing, and promote in the entire world a model of living that produces no wastes. In this sense, local and regional institutions and organizations have a vital role. We should strengthen our cooperation with such regional organizations as the European Union, the Turkic Council and the Africa Union as well as the UN and its affiliated organizations. In fact, the world, with its current resources, is sufficient for 1.5 times its population, provided that we change, be just and know to share.”

Announcing that UN-Habitat’s October 31 World Cities Day event will be held in Istanbul in 2023, Mrs. Erdoğan invited all the members of the Board to Istanbul on that occasion.

First Lady Erdoğan made a speech at the online meeting.
